  • Woluwe attempts self-isolation

    With the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Belgium rising to eight today (2 March 2020 updated) the mayor of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert has unilaterally banned anyone who has recently traveled to China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, South Korea, Iran or northern Italy from accessing local schools and other municipal buildings such as care homes, libraries and the town hall.


    The measure has been condemned as "totally disproportionate" by Belgium's federal health minister Maggie De Block and the move has prompted Brussels minister-president Rudi Vervoort to call a meeting of the region's 19 municipal mayors to discuss a more coordinated approach in the capital.

  • Some changes from 1 March

    As of Sunday 1 March 2020 a few things have changed in Belgium: non-prior post will now only be delivered by Bpost two times a week; dentists’ index-linked fees rise by 1.95%; the price of a MuseumPass increases from €50 to €59 (still excellent value for money in my personal opinion); and new rules on radiation protection come into force.


    Meanwhile in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg all public transport is now completely free with the exception of first class travel on trains and certain night buses.

  • Grab those skis - but be quick

    The snow may have been transitory in Brussels but up to 25cm of snow has fallen in the southeast of Belgium. A total of nine Belgian downhill ski-centres around Liege province are open and may remain so into the weekend depending on how rapid the thaw is.


    Six cross-country ski centres in East Belgium have been open since Wednesday including Baraque Michel situated in one of the highest locations in the country.

  • Welcome Bus 56

    From Monday 2 March a new bus - No 56 - will connect the EU district with Schaerbeek and Neder-Over-Heembeek providing a link between the north of the city and Schuman metro and train stations.


    The new route is part of a bigger overhaul of the STIB/MIVB bus network that will continue with two new lines from Erasme to Uccle Stalle and from Central Station to Forest National in the Autumn.

  • New 30kph zone extends from Flagey

    From Sunday 1 March the speed limit in the streets around the Ixelles ponds will be 30kph. The new low speed zone extends the existing 30kph area around the Flagey Cultural Centre to all of the avenues that run along the ponds, such as Eperons d’Or and Général de Gaulle, and between the ponds.


    There is no grace period for the new speed limits: as of Sunday, anyone caught speeding around the ponds will be fined.

    Our new website is now live!

    Welcome to the new BBCA website!   BBCA has migrated to a new web platform as of 25 February 2020.

    Our new web platform has a more modern look and feel. It will help the BBCA operate more effectively. And will also provide new features and functionalities for our members.

    The project was lead by volunteer Chris Dalton. He said: "I became part of the BBCA because I was looking to give something back after retiring early from my career due to family issues. I initially volunteered at the Wednesday Club to help some more elderly English speaking retirees living around Brussels to attend a bi-weekly social event. The Wednesday Club is closely linked to the BBCA - so I was invited to join the BBCA committee, which I did with pleasure."

    "What I found was a group of people totally committed to improving the lives of people who may be struggling.  In our case focused on the English speaking community around Brussels."

    He went on: " I also found people working long hours to manage the organisation, and working with old systems which made that job even tougher.   So the new website project was really a great example of what the BBCA is all about."

    "Volunteers working together to achieve benefits that could not be done on a commercial basis - making the world a better place."

    The new website was built using Membership Software from a company called Wild Apricot.  It's modern cloud-based software designed to enable organisations to communicate better with their communities and to improve the quality of service they can provide to members.

    Chris went on: "Yes its great software.  With great features that allows the BBCA to publish news and manage events, share important information and allow members to communicate better. It also automates the process of people joining and renewing their memberships."

    "More importantly, the new platform will make us more organised and freeing up volunteers to spend more time on helping people and developing the work we do for them. It will allow us to focus on developing our membership rather than on the administration of membership," he concludes.

  • Brussels Art Nouveau & Art Deco Festival 2020

    The Brussels Art Nouveau & Art Deco (BANAD) Festival promotes the Art Nouveau and Art Deco heritage of the Belgian capital and this year it is taking place over the last three weekends in March.


    Visits to over 65 buildings across the city have been arranged and amongst the new attractions this year are historical lifts and the newly restored Saint-Josse public swimming pool.

  • Bourse to become Beer Experience

    This summer the landmark Bourse building on Boulevard Anspach will be transformed into a tourist attraction with a focus on Belgian beer.


    The ground floor will be an open gallery where visitors can walk through anytime they want 24/7 and will also be used as event space. The second floor will be home to a beer experience centre, which will be a paid attraction, and above that will be a ‘sky bar’, including a rooftop terrace.

  • Official: Belgium is 8th best country to raise kids

    According to a new international report published today by the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and The Lancet, Belgium is the eighth best country in the world to bring up children.


    Belgium ranked ahead of its neighbouring countries (10th), Luxembourg (11th) and Germany (14th) with the top seven countries being Norway, followed by South Korea, the Netherlands, France, Ireland, Denmark and Japan.
