A range of environmental pressures, from global climate change to local soil degradation, is pushing the global water cycle to its extremes. All over the world, hydroclimatic hazards such as floods and droughts are becoming longer, more frequent, and more extreme. The impacts affect billions of people that are directly exposed to these risks but also ripple through the global economy and social fabric. Addressing these issues is a formidable challenge, which requires novel engineering solutions, but also new economic approaches, governance arrangements, diplomacy, and social contracts. In this talk, Prof Buytaert will go on a journey through the world’s rivers, from tiny mountain catchments in the Andes to the biggest transboundary river basins. Taking a systems perspective, he will analyse the internal and external pressures they face, as well as the challenges and opportunities for designing sustainable solutions embedded in local realities.
Please note that this event will take place at the Universite Catholique de Louvain in Auditorium Lavoisier (LAVO 51) in the Chemistry Department at Louvain la Neuve. It will be followed by a social networking opportunity.
